Words of wisdom in stressful times – from 1866!

The 1866 diary of my paternal third great-aunt, Mary Jane Edwards

Sunday, March 11, 1866

We looked for the Ohio teachers on the morning train but they did not come & no word from them. We received a letter from home; they are well as usual. Change is going on among our friends & acquaintances: some are married, some are consigned to the tomb, since our departure from the land of a nativity. This evening Adj. Stephens and the teachers from camp, with Chap. Wright & Mr. Bardwell, a superintendent of colored schools, called in to participate in our Bible class, lesson 6th chapter of Romans. We had a very pleasant time comparing opinions & electing truth. The more we apply ourselves to the study of the Scriptures, the more is beauty & harmony manifested in them.”

A few of my favorite Bibles

During times of challenge and change, like Mary Jane, I’ve noticed that my attention to my Bible reading and discussion brings me more “beauty and harmony” and a better capacity to address the challenges of life.

What brings you peace?
