Mary Stuart and I opened school this morning in the colored Methodist Church with thirty pupils. The room is quite commodious [and] will accommodate 100 pupils. It is one mile from our boarding house. We will not return for dinner as the walk is rather too much.

If school buses and cars were no longer available to provide school transportation today, how many students would be willing to walk to school?
If parents weren’t able to snake their way through the parking lots to drop off their kids at school or leave early from work to pick them up after school, how many would want their child to hoof it to school or home? What about in inclement weather?

How many teachers would be willing to walk to school to teach the students who showed up?
How valuable is education to our citizens and society today?

What would you give up for an education?
